How do you grow hydrangea in a Pittsburgh like climate?
Get a relaiable cultivar, such as endless summer or nikko blue. Buy the biggest plant you can afford, because it will be easier to establish. Dig a hole twice the size of the pot the hydrangea is planted in, and sink the plant. Backfill with rich, organic soil that has been amended with compost. Keep the plant hydrated. Do not pick or deadhead blooms the first couple of years if you want the hydrangea to achieve maximum size quickly, as new blloms in ensuing years come off the wood created by this year's blooms.
