i have two lace cap hydrangea in large containers, i have been cutting them back in the late fall and then using the cuttings to cover them before winter sets in. am i doing the correct thing by cutting them back or should i leave them alone.
Hydrangea question?
Hello
Well that would depend upon how far back you pruned them. Hydrangea's will only spawn buds and blooms off of its previous years growth, so if you pruned it back to far then you will get no blooms. Usually you can cut the blooms back about 6 inches and not to much farther. Secondly depending on your zone they shouldn't be anywhere near blooming yet. They tend to bud up late May early June and then flower. If you didn't cut it back hard then you may just need to wait another month. Try useing a high phosphorous fertilizer to force the buds and blooms.

Reply:Don't cut them back too far. Hydrangeas bloom from the old woody canes. If you cut the older canes back too far, you my not get as many blooms.
Good Luck!!!
