Hydrangea?(question only for people who know about hydrangea!)?

My bf got me a hydrangea plant for my b-day, the flowers are starting to die and i don't know what to do!

does anyone know how to make homemade soil because i can't go to the store for some, and should i cut the old flowers that are dying off?

Thanks a lot!!!

Cut the flowers off and keep it watered a bit, about once a week if it isn't too wet already. Make sure it has a drain hole so the water can escape and not be waterlogged.

It should be ok for a couple months or so in it's container until you do get some soil and a cheap pot to repot it. It will be ok if the area isn't too hot and you keep it in a bright area, not hot sun.

How about that bf get you those things you need, since he did buy you the present? :-) Don't forget to check out the web for growing them in containers! Best of luck!

I hope this expert advice helps.
Reply:Yes, it's called dead heading, just pinch off the dead flower heads, this will help the other blooming flowers. I believe that they like more acidic soil also. Hmm, as for making your own soil. Look for some decay from a dead tree and add it to soil, that's actually compost, it's good for the plant. Make sure it has good drainage too, you'll get root rot. The pot should have a hole in the bottom to drain. That also means if there is foil on the pot, take it off, that's only decorative. Oh, and if you have any fertilizers around, look on the back for phosphorus content. phosphorus will actually force the plant to bloom, but be careful how much you add, you could burn the plant. I use Osmocote slow release, that way it goes in every watering, and it's not enough to hurt the plant. Good luck!!!
Reply:The dead flowers of the hydrangea are held on the bush and can look very attractive when frosted. It is not necessary for the health of the shrub to cut them when they die.

I always leave mine until the correct time to prune which is during the dormant season.

Reply:There are different types of hydrangeas. Some are rebloomers and others only bloom once in the season. Either way, yes clip off the old flowers. If is a rebloomer, this will encourage more blooms. If it's not, it will let the plant focus its energy in growing for a bigger and stronger plant for the next summer. Sorry, I can't help with the homemade soil unless you have items like humus, vermiculite, manure, and the sorts.
