Pruning hydrangea?

When and how is the best way to prune hydrangea. I'm told that it should be done once per year in the winter months.

Pruning hydrangea?
I prune mine in early springtime just before the last frost. My hydrangea blooms only on new wood. You have to remember that it REALLY depends on what variety of hydrangea you have. Some will bloom only on old wood and others only on new wood. There are a few varieties now that will bloom on both.

If you are unsure, when you prune in the springtime and your hydrangea does not bloom this year then it is a variety that blooms on old wood. It will bloom the following year...
Reply:If you don't know what type of Hydrangea you have... don't prune after about the first week or so of summer (depending on your growing area). That's when Hydrangeas that grow on old wood are setting the buds for the next spring's flowers.

This doesn't apply to Hydrangeas like 'Endless Summer' types that can bloom on both old or new wood.

then read their page on pruning.... they'll tellya the right stuff....

basically, tho, the pink and blue ones don't get pruned until AFTER they've bloomed in spring/early summer... the white ones can be pruned in late fall/winter or spring, cuz they don't bloom until late summer or early fall..... and they're always white... those, you can cut down pretty severe if necessary.... and do make sure that if you have the New Endless Summer types, that you FEED them really good... they need it to keep on making blooms all season.....
Reply:I prune my Hydrangea mid winter - but I dont get frosts here. If I did get frosts I would wait till closer to spring. I really just hack mine back to a few sticks two foot off the ground - it loves it! By the time it flowers again about 6 months later it is at least 5 foot tall and wide.
