I have always wanted an Annabelle hydrangea in my yard and have a special spot for it that I've been saving for a year or so. Today, I was at my local nursery and saw they had a few so I grabbed one. It says on the tag to plant in April or May in my area. I live in Chicago, so I'm wondering if I should plant toward the end of May after all danger of frost is gone or do they need some cold time in the ground, whatever little cold time may be left right now. Thanks!
When to plant Annabelle hydrangea in zone 5?
The hydrangea family is really strong, you should be fine to plant it now, just dont over water it now since its cold were you live, it could get mildewy.
That type of hydrangea is very versatile, its like most other hydrangeas, it prefers morning sun and afternoon shade or bits of shade thruout the day. Although a lot of people say its better in heavy shade, I don't think that's the same with this type of hydrangea.
The more morning sun it gets the better it blooms. The blooms don't last as long if they are exposed regularly to hot afternoon sun, but it will not kill the plant (shrub).
And it loves water, sometimes when I water my hydrangea's I spray the whole head with water. When I design (I'm a floral designer) I take the heads and completely submerged them in water, for an hour then I put a fresh cut ion them and they are happy!!
If you cut the flowers after they bloom and bring them into your house, put a X cut at the end of the stem along with an angled cut. It will provide more ways for water to feed your flower and it will last longer. :)
Reply:You won't have a problem if you plant it now instead of May. It is a hardy shrub and you won't have a problem as long as you are able to dig a hole and work the soil Annabelle's are gorgous! Enjoy!
